After achieving periodontal stability, the chronic condition is controlled with quality home care, along with professional hygiene care. The bacteria that caused the original periodontal disease will always be present in your mouth and for this reason bacteria and biofilm removal is the key to your regularly scheduled professional hygiene care. The frequency of these maintenance visits will vary according to your individual needs. However, studies show that after active periodontal therapy, it takes merely three months for the opportunistic gum disease bacterial colonies to reestablish activity in the gums. Dr. Fotek takes this know fact very seriously and will recommend a strict maintenance protocol not to allow for new disease to repopulate the gums. Continual maintenance with our biological hygienist is critical to your oral health or this silent infection will lead to various systemic conditions and your declining health.
During your visit, our biological hygienist will:
- Perform an oral cancer screening
- Assess your gum health and home care habits
- Perform microscopic biofilm analysis if gum health is present
Your teeth and gums will then be meticulously cleansed to remove the biofilm. The process is achieved using ozone assisted ultrasonic machine and hand scalers, then finished with a thorough polishing using our office made fluoride free polishing paste. If found necessary, adjunct ozone gas may be used to further kill the gum disease causing bacteria. This appointment should be a pleasant and relaxing one.
Good oral and periodontal health have proven benefits that extend beyond a clean mouth. Benefits on your overall health include:
- Improved blood sugar regulation among diabetics
- Stroke prevention and brain health
- Cardiovascular health
- Respiratory and reproductive health
- And more!
Don’t underestimate the importance of your professional maintenance hygiene appointment; it is so much more than “just a cleaning”.
