Tooth extractions can be scary. While sedation and over-the-counter painkillers can make the procedure less painful, a reliable professional and proper aftercare are key to avoiding complications and restoring your oral health. A biological dentist’s tooth extraction may be better to make this process easier.

Biological dentists aim to promote long-term wellness. To do so, we offer dental extractions with ozone therapy and PRF to foster healing and improve treatment outcomes.

When Are Dental Extractions Necessary?

Tooth extraction refers to removing a tooth from its socket in the jawbone.

Dentists always try to preserve natural teeth as much as possible, as no dental restoration can achieve the durability your natural teeth offer. However, when a tooth is severely infected to the point it cannot be restored, extractions may be necessary to protect oral health.

There are two main types of dental extractions:

  • Simple extractions involve removing visible teeth. It’s a simple procedure that a general dentist can perform.
  • Surgical extractions handle more complex cases, such as impacted teeth, and are often performed by oral surgeons.

Some cases in which dental extractions are necessary include:

1. Severe Tooth Decay or Damage

Extraction is the only option when a tooth is severely decayed and cannot be restored with crowns, fillings, or root canal therapy. This applies to cases in which restorations simply don’t have enough natural tooth structure to attach to and will probably break or fall off when exposed to the mouth’s chewing forces.

Fractured or broken teeth also may need to be extracted, especially if the fracture extends beyond the gum line. In these cases, the gum’s humid environment makes it impossible to bond dental restorations, making proper repair impossible.

2. Gum Disease

Left untreated, gum disease starts to affect the periodontal ligament, which holds teeth in place. Over time, teeth become loose, making extraction necessary to prevent the infection from expanding to the surrounding gum tissue and bone and compromising nearby teeth.

3. Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, were fundamental for humankind when our diets consisted mainly of raw produce. However, since we switched to cooking foods (which tend to be softer), these teeth have lost their use and our jaws have become smaller, leaving less space for them.

For that reason, wisdom teeth tend to grow at odd angles or fail to emerge fully. While this may not cause issues initially, partially emerged wisdom teeth are harder to clean. If they develop cavities or gum disease, they can cause pain, infection, or crowding. To prevent that and avoid damage to adjacent teeth, dentists recommend extractions.

4. Overcrowding

Extractions may be necessary for an overcrowded smile before orthodontic treatment. This creates the space necessary for achieving proper alignment.

Overlapping teeth aren’t only an aesthetic concern. They are often harder to clean properly, which increases the risk of decay and puts your smile at risk. That’s why dentists recommend extraction in combination with an orthodontic treatment.

5. Infection or Abscess

Extracting a tooth with a severe infection that doesn't improve with antibiotics or root canal treatment might be necessary. If abscesses are not treated, they can pose major health risks.

What Is Biological Dentistry, and How Can It Help During a Dental Extraction?

Biological dentistry is a holistic approach to oral health that strongly emphasizes conservative treatment techniques and prevention.

By avoiding harmful substances and promoting long-term wellness with natural materials and non-toxic treatments, biological dentists take into account the link between oral health and general health. The goal of their whole-body approach to dental care is to enhance both general and oral health.

When it comes to dental extractions, a holistic approach can help minimize the physical and psychological discomfort and speed up the recovery time.

Extraction with PRF

PRF is a biological dentistry technique that promotes healing after dental extractions.

Platelet Rich Fibrin, or PRF, is produced by processing your own blood. Your blood already contains healing elements such as platelets and growth factors that naturally help you recover after an injury or surgery. Dentists can take advantage of this and contribute to a better healing process by using their blood plasma to generate PRF.

PRF helps form blood clots for faster tissue regeneration. This treatment is particularly beneficial right after a tooth extraction because it reduces the likelihood of complications following the procedure, eases post-extraction discomfort, and virtually ensures that you won't develop a dry socket.

Other benefits of PRF include:

  • It’s a safe and natural procedure
  • Quick application
  • Patients experience decreased swelling
  • There’s less pain after extraction surgery

By using our PRF treatment, we can minimize the use of harmful chemicals and medications while improving your recovery times, fostering healing, and reducing any possible discomfort!

How Is PRF Used in Dental Extractions

  1. Like a standard blood test, a tiny amount of blood is first extracted from your arm.
  2. After that, the sample is put into a specialized device known as a centrifuge. This device rapidly spins the blood to separate its constituent parts. We are searching for fibrin and platelets that are abundant in stem cell-like qualities and healing factors.
  3. After separating the PRF, the dentist applies it straight to the surgical site.

Ozone Therapy for Dental Extractions

Ozone is a powerful antimicrobial that kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It also promotes tissue healing by increasing the production of proteins and red blood cells and enhancing local oxygenation. This encourages cell regeneration, which replaces or repairs damaged cells.

Using it during dental procedures can boost your immune system, reduce the risk of infection, and speed up tissue repair.
