Bonding changes how a tooth looks. It does not treat what is underneath, which is why we check the health of the tooth and the gum first and deal with anything active before any composite goes on.

Dental Healing Arts is a metal-free and mercury-free practice, and bonding is one of the places that matters most. The composite sits against your gum tissue and stays there. We select biocompatible composite with no metal content, and if material sensitivity is the reason you are looking for a biological dentist in the first place, it applies here as much as it does to fillings or crowns.
Bonding, Veneers, Or Whitening
These get confused, so plainly: bonding is composite sculpted onto the tooth in a single visit, suited to small chips, gaps and reshaping. Porcelain veneers are lab-made shells bonded to the front, better for larger changes across several teeth. Whitening changes the shade only, not the shape. If shade is the only concern, whitening is usually the cheaper starting point, and it is normally done before bonding rather than after, so the composite can be matched to the lighter shade.
What Bonding Costs
Cost depends on how many teeth are involved, how much shaping each one needs, and whether anything has to be treated first. Bonding is normally the least expensive of the cosmetic options, because it is done chairside in a single visit with no laboratory work, unlike veneers or crowns. You get a written estimate after the consultation, before anything is scheduled.
Where Bonding Is Not The Right Answer
- It stains. Composite picks up colour from coffee, tea and red wine in a way porcelain does not.
- It chips. Composite is not as strong as porcelain or natural enamel.
- It does not whiten. Once placed, composite keeps its shade.
- It is not for large changes. If several teeth need reshaping, veneers or a crown will hold up better.
What The Appointment Looks Like
- Consultation. We look at the tooth, the bite and the gum, and tell you honestly whether bonding is the right tool.
- Shade matching. The composite is matched to the teeth beside it in natural light.
- Placement. The surface is prepared, the composite applied in layers, shaped and cured.
- Polish and bite check. We adjust until it feels like nothing.

Questions We Get Asked
Does bonding hurt?
For most straightforward cases there is no drilling into healthy tooth, so anaesthetic is often not needed. Dr. Ilona will tell you before you sit down which applies to your case.
How long does it last?
Longer on a tooth that takes little biting force, shorter on an edge that does. Grinding, nail biting and chewing ice shorten it. A night guard extends it if you grind. Bonding is also repairable.
Will it stain?
Composite can pick up staining over time in a way porcelain does not. It can be polished, and replaced without losing the tooth underneath.
Is the material safe?
We use biocompatible, metal-free composite. If you have known sensitivities we can test before we place anything.
